The Daily News

Daily News

Founded in 1919, the Daily News has been publishing in New York City for over one hundred and fifty years. The newspaper’s circulation is over 200,000 today and the newspaper remains an important part of the city’s cultural and political life. In addition to its news, the paper also publishes celebrity gossip, comics and classified ads. Besides its printed version, the paper is available in an interactive version that offers an enhanced reading experience.

Although the Daily News has changed significantly over the years, its mission has remained the same. It is to cover and record the life of New York and the people of the city. However, over the years, the newspaper has been a victim of financial troubles and is currently in the midst of an uncertain future.

In 2017, the newspaper was bought by Tribune Publishing, which has a minority share owned by Alden Global Capital. During this period, the Daily News has been in the midst of a circulation battle with the New York Post. At first, Tribune Publishing offered journalists buyouts. But then the pandemic hit and many of the Daily News’s employees began campaigns to save the paper. When the Daily News was bought by Tribune Publishing, the newspaper’s staff was cut in half.

After a few months, the name of the newspaper changed from the Illustrated Daily News to the Daily News. The newspaper started to attract readers with its lurid photos and sensational coverage of crime. From the 1940s to the 1960s, the Daily News was staunchly conservative. Eventually, the newspaper gained a reputation as a moderate liberal alternative to the right-wing Post.

In 1948, the Daily News established its own radio station, WPIX. Later, it was purchased by Emmis Communications. As a result, WPIX-FM became a simulcast of the AM radio station and is now owned by CBS Radio.

In the 1980s, the Daily News began shifting from a metropolitan tabloid to a more national publication. In the mid-1970s, the Daily News became the model for the tabloid in the 1994 film, “The Paper”. Many of its mainstays sat on a bench when it moved. Some of these include legendary boxing writer Jimmy Cannon and the actor Dick Young.

In the 1990s, the Daily News was under the control of a media mogul named Mortimer B. Zuckerman. He is a New York real estate developer. Aside from owning the Daily News, Zuckerman also founded the company Tronc, which is a Chicago-based media company.

Today, The Daily News is owned by Tribune Publishing, which also owns The Orlando Sentinel. However, the paper has not been profitable since the 1980s and has been in the midst of financial troubles for decades. Despite its struggles, the newspaper has continued to provide strong local news and sports coverage.

Throughout its history, the Daily News has won numerous awards for commentary, feature writing and international reporting. For instance, in 2017, the newspaper won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service.
