The Daily News

Founded in 1919, the Daily News was the first newspaper printed in tabloid format. It is renowned for its bold journalism and commitment to New York City, with coverage of politics, sports, entertainment, culture and community news. It is currently owned by Tronc, the parent company of Tribune Publishing (which was sold in 2017 for $1).

The News also maintains a number of affiliate television and radio stations. In 1948, the paper established what would become WPIX, whose call letters were based on its nickname of “New York’s Picture Newspaper”. In 1996, it launched the newspaper insert BET Weekend for African Americans, which has since grown into a monthly publication. The News at one time maintained local bureaus in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens. Its headquarters is in the historic art deco Daily News Building on 450 West 33rd Street in Manhattan.

In 1975, the News published what became its most famous headline in its then-56-year history: “FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD”. The newspaper referred to President Gerald Ford’s decision to veto a bankruptcy bail-out for New York City and its subsequent financial collapse. It was a major factor in his loss to Jimmy Carter in the 1976 presidential election.

The News’s reputation for pursuing controversial and difficult stories continues to this day, and its writers are often awarded Pulitzer Prizes. Historically, the newspaper was known as a strong Republican publication; however, in recent years it has adopted a more moderate to liberal stance.

Today, the News is read by millions of people in the United States and is one of the largest metropolitan newspapers in the country. Its staff is made up of reporters who gather and write factual articles, photographers who provide images, illustrators who create drawings and graphics, and writers who write longer pieces that include opinions or personal experiences. Some writers cover specific subjects, called beats, while others focus on more general or topical issues. The News is also staffed by editors and copy editors who edit the paper’s content for quality and consistency.

The News is a well-known publication and has been featured in many films and TV shows. Its logo, which includes the word “Daily” in a stylized “New York” font, is widely recognized. The News’s website is a popular destination for people looking to find breaking news and in-depth articles. The site is also home to the News’s opinion page, which provides a forum for readers to express their views on current events and topics. The website is available in a number of languages. The Daily News’s social media accounts are active on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. Its YouTube channel features various videos of current events and news footage from around the world. The News also offers a subscription service through which readers can receive a daily email with the latest news and analysis. Its online edition is available in English, French, and Spanish. The News is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists and the New York Press Club.
