The Daily News

Daily News

Founded in 1919, the Daily News is New York City’s premier newspaper, renowned for its bold journalism, commitment to New York city and strong visual content. The News reports on breaking news, in-depth investigations, politics, sports and the latest celebrity gossip and entertainment news. It also features local community news and lifestyle articles. The Daily News is the first tabloid newspaper in the United States and is currently owned by Tronc, an American media company.

The Daily News is available in print, online and on your mobile device. The app allows you to save articles for offline reading and to share them with friends through email or social media. It also allows you to customize your news experience by handpicking the sources you trust and filtering out those you don’t, curating a tailored news feed for you. It’s the antidote to news overload!

In addition to its newspaper business, the Daily News has established television and radio stations. In 1948, the newspaper created a New York City television station with its call letters taken from the News’ nickname, “New York’s Picture Newspaper.” In 1984, the Daily News purchased what became WPIX-FM, an FM simulcast of its AM namesake. The radio station remains in the same New York City building as its namesake newspaper.

The paper also maintains a large photo department, one of the largest in the country, and is a leader in the use of digital photography. Its newspaper business has been challenged in recent years by declining print circulation and advertising revenue, and by competition from a muscular hometown tabloid rival, the News Corp-owned New York Post. It has also struggled to adapt to the changing digital media environment, as readers have increasingly moved away from traditional newspapers and toward online content.

Daily News is also known for its philanthropic work in the city of New York. The newspaper has donated millions of dollars to the city’s public schools and has contributed to the construction of several parks. The Daily News has won numerous awards for its journalism, including a Pulitzer Prize in 1992.

During the Yale Daily News’ storied history, many of its staff members have gone on to prominent careers in both journalism and other fields. They include William F. Buckley, Lan Samantha Chang, John Hersey, Joseph Lieberman, Sargent Shriver, Strobe Talbott, Garry Trudeau and Calvin Trillin, among others.

The Daily News Archive includes issues of the newspaper from 1996 to present. In 2021, an anonymous Yale College alumnus made a major gift to support the continued preservation and digitization of the archive. The Yale Daily News is published every weekday during the academic year and serves both the Yale and New Haven communities. The newspaper is the oldest college daily in the country and is independent of financial and editorial control by Yale University. It is the most comprehensive source of information on the student life at Yale and beyond.
